Ask someone what the best exercises around are, and you’ll get things like running, swimming, weightlifting, and so on. Walking, however, is something that gets forgotten. Maybe it seems too soft, passive, easy. Maybe we only think of it as a means of transportation, and not as an exercise at all.
Whatever the reason, walking doesn’t get the respect it deserves as an exercise in it’s own right. Sure, maybe it doesn’t break the same sweat, raise the heart rate to same height, or leave your body feeling as exhausted as other more intense activities, but as this article on the Huffington Post notes, walking can be a hardcore exercise:
Just because walking is less intense than high-intensity interval training, spinning and other high-impact exercises doesn’t mean there aren’t real health benefits to walking.
A 2015 study from the University of Cambridge found that a brisk 20-minute walk every day — the amount of exercise that moves someone from the “inactive” category to the “moderately inactive” category — can reduce the chance of early death by 16 to 30 percent.
Given that too many people live a sedentary, chair-ridden lifestyle these days, getting up and going for a walk can actually have remarkable benefits. Don’t take my word for it, head over to the Huffington Post for all the science.
