Nobody likes to forget. While our memories naturally aren’t as good as we’d like them to be, the dreaded loss that starts occurring as Alzheimer’s disease sets in is far worse. We’ve all heard stories, seen movies, or known someone personally, that’s had to suffer through the awful symptoms of it.
But it turns out, that there are more early signs than memory loss. The mental deterioration is most prominent in the memory functions of our brains, but it is in no way limited to them. As this article on the Huffington Post points out, there are many other symptoms that point to Alzheimer’s:
Inability to Recognize Sarcasm
“That was a sarcastic remark.” We say this regularly because we can tell when someone is using the wise-guy device of sarcasm. But if you fail to recognize it, or take it very literally and seriously, it may be a sign of atrophy in your brain. (We all miss it from time to time, of course, but if you consistently “don’t get it,” it could be a problem.)
Perhaps as science evolves, and armed with all of the skills needed to detect the scary disease, we can start helping people more and eventually prevent it altogether. For now it’s important to recognize the beginning and find help. Check out the full post for all the early signs and what they mean.
