When most of us think about health and fitness, we immediately think about weight. Obesity is a problem many of us are facing these days, and in most circumstances it is a clear indication of a lack of physical wellbeing. But, in other circumstances, it may be inaccurate.

New research is suggesting that weight is not as important as cardiovascular fitness, and that holding a little extra weight is nothing to worry about. Of course, while this may help to change our perspectives on what good health is, obesity is still a big problem, and the two are clearly linked: if you improve your fitness, chances are you’ll lose weight too. The Huffington Post has more:

In other words, an obese person with a high level of fitness would be expected to live longer than a non-obese person who is not fit.

Although the obesity paradox may seem counterintuitive, numerous epidemiological studies have shown that among people who have heart disease those who are overweight or obese tend to have a better prognosis than those who are leaner.

So when we’re out there trying to improve upon our health and fitness, we shouldn’t be focusing so intently on our weight as an accurate measure of it. Check out the full post for all the details.
