The search for anti-aging treatments is gaining speed, and when it comes to the brain, scientists are making great strides. One notable discovery is the essential role that BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) plays. This important protein is used by the brain to grow and strengthen neuronal connections, making it a key factor in learning.
BDNF is a naturally occurring product of the brain, but there are things we can do to boost it. The most common method consists of exercise, which is shown to promote the release of BDNF like nothing else. Now, scientists studying rats have found that a compound called ampakine can also boost BDNF:
Previous rat studies have indicated that a compound known as ampakine can improve age-related cognitive deficits, and that it can boost production of a key growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
“There is a tendency to think that aging is an inexorable process, that it is something in the genes, and there is nothing you can do about it. This paper is saying that may not be true.”
Whether this effect carries over into humans is yet to be seen, but it’s becoming very clear how big of a role BDNF plays in our anti-aging endeavors. Check out the full post for more details.
