Blueberries are delicious little fruits that have already proven to be somewhat of a superfood. For those health-inclined individuals out there—and that should be everyone—superfoods are particular items of food that go above and beyond all the others in offering us incredible health benefits.

Blueberries were already in this category, but now research is giving them even more reason to stay there. New studies have demonstrated that the anthocyanins compound found in blueberries aids memory and cognitive function, and could be remarkably useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease:

“Our new findings corroborate those of previous animal studies and preliminary human studies, adding further support to the notion that blueberries can have a real benefit in improving memory and cognitive function in some older adults,” Krikorian states.

Previous research has attributed protection against cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and some forms of cancer to anthocyanins. It is these anthocyanins, as well as high levels of antioxidants in the berries, that the researchers suggest are behind the beneficial effects they believe their studies illustrate.

While the treatment of certain neurodegenerative diseases is important, there’s also hope that even healthy individuals could benefit in similar ways. Check out the full post for all the details.
