The brain naturally declines as we age, our memory starts to fade and problem solving becomes a greater struggle. For some of us the effects are more dramatic than others, but we all would love to find out how to slow or even stop it. This is where a lot of research is being focused.

One such cognitive booster is the MIND diet. This diet, which is high in fish, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, beans, and berries—along with the odd glass of wine—has shown to protect against diseases such as Alzheimer’s. It’s not the first diet with research backing it up, others such as the Mediterranean and the DASH diet are also effective. NewOK looks into the elements of the effective MIND diet:

1. Olive oil, green tea and leafy greens (broccoli, spinach and kale)

Each of these antioxidant superfoods helps fight inflammation. And while inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, uncontrolled inflammation over time can damage the brain. Intervene with these anti-inflammatory foods before neurons die, and you may be able to restore normal brain function, says Paula C. Bickford, professor of neurosurgery and brain repair at the University of South Florida.

What we eat is one of the most influential factors determining our health and wellbeing throughout life, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that diets like the MIND diet are your best bet. Check out the full post for more details.
