As the population increases it’s life span, memory loss becomes a more pressing concern. It seems that a side-effect to living a longer life is that our memory must decline from a certain point onwards. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are affecting more people every year, is there a way to help fend of these ailments?

There is, but the best way for us to do that is to start as early as we can with preventative measures. It’s no good try to fix your memory once it has begun to decline. If we start protecting it early in life, we set ourselves up for a long life that’s unmarred by forgetting. So, what are some of the activities we can do to curtail memory loss? As NewsMax points out, yoga and meditation work a treat:

The team followed a group of 25 participants all aged 55 and over during a three-month course of either yoga and meditation or memory training.

The results showed that although all participants demonstrated similar improvements in verbal memory skills, the skills that are needed for remembering names, it was the participants in the group who practiced yoga and meditation that showed better improvements in visual-spatial memory skills, which help with recalling locations and navigating.

Commenting on the significance of the results Harris Eyre, the study’s lead author, said, “Historically and anecdotally, yoga has been thought to be beneficial in aging well, but this is the scientific demonstration of that benefit. We’re converting historical wisdom into the high level of evidence required for doctors to recommend therapy to their patients.”

The combination leads to greater improvements than one by itself. The calming influence of meditation and the physical movement during yoga likely provide some explanation. Check out the full post for more details.
