We already know how to live a lot longer than the unfortunate souls of the distant past. While 30 might have been pushing it several hundred years ago, reaching 65 in this day and age seems almost like a given. We can thank our constant progress within science and technology, our environment is safe and comfortable, and our bodies are well nourished and easily operated on.

While those aspects of life have changed dramatically in the past, and only look as if their rapid advancements will continue, one promising drug took 37 years for the FDA to approve it in the US. Initially approved in England in 1957 to treat type II diabetes, the drug has displayed ant aging properties that might make it a hot topic. Life Extension Daily News has more:

“Although it might seem like science fiction, researchers have already proven that the diabetes drug metformin extends the life of animals, and the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. has now given the go ahead for a trial to see if the same effects can be replicated in humans,” said Sarah Knapton, science editor for The Telegraph based in the U.K.

According to the 2015 Strategic Social Initiative, “Scientists think the best candidate for an anti-aging drug is metformin, the world’s most widely used diabetes drug which costs just 10p a day. Metformin increases the number of oxygen molecules released into a cell, which appears to boost robustness and longevity.”

If the end result of the studies is as promising as some of the initial hype, our lives might continue to be lengthened in the near future. Until the trials are done and we know for sure, we’ll need to settle for the 80 – 90 years that most of us reach now. Check out the full post for more details of the study.
