When we think of getting a check up, it’s normally the kind where a doctor looks into your eyes, your ears, the back of your mouth, asks you a few questions and determines you’re fine. When we want to go a little further, we might get a blood test done, because surely that holds all the secrets to our wellbeing.
These are all good measures of health, to be sure, but no one really likes needles, wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to get a good idea of your health–and in particular, how at risk you are of dying–from something easier to take than blood? It may be the case that your saliva holds some of these secrets, as it holds a particular antibody that is essential to fighting off viruses and bacteria. Newsmax has more:
Researchers from the UK performed a study using 639 adults from Scotland, who were 63 years old at the time the study began. They took saliva sampling and then tracked their mortality rates over the following 19 years.
They found that those people who had lower amount of IgA in their saliva were more likely to die. Also, upon further analysis, they found that these people were more likely to die from cancer, particularly non-lung cancer.
Feel like going to the doctor? I wouldn’t blame you, great thing is there’s no needles, otherwise I’d probably just prefer not to know. Check out the full post for more details.
