Exercise Boosts Memory in Older Adults

It likely comes as no surprise that physical health has effects on almost every facet of our bodies and minds. Just the simple fact that more blood and oxygen start pulsating through your body, and of course through the brain, means we function more effectively and with more energy.

New research has demonstrated the link between exercise and memory in older adults. At a stage in life where memory can falter, when Alzheimer’s becomes more worrisome and our mental abilities lose their edge, exercise may provide the most efficient way to reduce those effects and boost our health. Scott Hayes, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and one of the authors of the study, commented on the results saying, ”Our findings that physical activity is positively associated with memory is appealing for a variety of reasons. Everyone knows that physical activity is a critical component to ward off obesity and cardiovascular-related disease. Knowing that a lack of physical activity may negatively impact one’s memory abilities will be an additional piece of information to motivate folks to stay more active.

Unfortunately many of us continue to find excuse after excuse for not exercising, we’re too busy, too tired, or otherwise, to get up and move.
