We live in an age of productivity. We have more responsibilities, more life goals and hobbies, and more expectations placed on us. Even worse, there is still a large misconception about what should be the goal in work, people are proud and brag of the fact that they worked through the night, they had no sleep, and fought through stress and tiredness to get some project finished on time.

Working hard is associated with a lack of sleep, stress, and pain. This is backwards, not only are those things unhealthy, but they also reduce our creativity and are actually less productive in the long run. Stress, a disease that’s eating away at this productivity nation, has now been shown to increase your risk for Alzheimer’s, as the Huffington Post details:

Neurologists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System in New York found that older adults who reported experiencing high stress levels were twice as likely to develop the memory problems that tend to precede full-blown Alzheimer’s.

“In response to stress, blood pressure goes up and stress hormones are activated,” Lipton explained. “These stress hormones… may interfere with brain structures involved in memory, including the hippocampus.”

Stress in small amounts can be beneficial, it’s when it goes beyond that, high levels of stress over an extended period of time can be drastically damaging. It’s time we started doing something to combat it. Check out the full post for more details of the study.
