We’ve all heard of superfoods before. They’re the foods that offer incredible health benefits with none of the bad stuff. They’re the likes of spinach, salmon, broccoli, and blueberries. They just pack a bigger punch than their alternatives.

Now, banana might have been included somewhere in this ballpark to begin with, but for most of us, banana equals solely the flesh on the inside. It turns out that the peel, that chewy yellow skin, might count as a superfood itself. You might cringe at the idea, but it’s packed full of vitamins and nutrients, and while you’ll want to buy organic bananas to avoid any pesticide, doing so might pay large dividends on your health:

While it may strike you as an alien concept to use banana skin in your daily diet, in many parts of the world, notably India and the Caribbean, the peel is used to add flavour and substance to dishes. And, there is now a growing consensus, which suggests the nutrients, compounds and minerals hidden away within the skin could help aid weight loss, and boost your mood.

Nutritionist Ella Allred told Daily Mail Online while ‘at first the peel may seem like an odd choice of food, investigate further and we realise there are nutritional benefits’.

She said: ‘The extra fibre in banana skins will certainly help with bowel regularity. ‘The nutrition profile of magnesium, potassium, vitamin C and B6 is not something to be sniffed at.’

Perhaps it’s time to stop throwing the rubbery peel away, and instead make use of it. The Daily Mail has more on the heath benefits of banana peel in their post.
