It’s been said before–working out isn’t enough to lose weight by itself. If our eating habits remain unstable or unhealthy, then the good work we do in the gym will be basically undone. That doesn’t mean you should drop the gym in favor of a diet, but rather that if you want to lose weight and get healthy, the two need to be done in combination.
Obesity is a life-shortener, it doesn’t matter if you go to the gym, if you can bench press another person or if you can fight your way through a marathon–if you’re not dropping the weight, then your health is still suffering. The idea of ‘fat but fit’ is misleading, and according to a new study presented in Life Extension Daily News, inaccurate:
… the results from the new study suggest that the protective effects of high fitness against early death are reduced in obese people.
Men of a normal weight, regardless of their fitness level, were at lower risk of death compared to obese individuals in the highest quarter of aerobic fitness. Nevertheless, the relative benefits of high fitness may still be greater in obese people. However, in this study the beneficial effect of high aerobic fitness was actually reduced with increased obesity, and in those with extreme obesity there was no significant effect at all.
By all means, continue to work out, and especially get in some aerobic activity, but remember to couple this with a healthy diet, pay attention to what you’re eating and try to lose weight, this is the key to a long life. Check out the full post for more.
