The best bet to aging gracefully and living longer is to eat well and exercise. For each of us, just what constitutes the right diet and the best exercise will differ greatly. To get ourselves into shape we often think of running, of doing weights or other intense cardio work, but we can overlook the easier simple things such as going for a walk.

Now, you’re not going to sweat life you would on a run, and your muscles aren’t going to ache and grow in the same fashion as doing weights, but when it comes to health, and in particular, living longer, walking has proven to be powerfully effective. In fact, in one study walking lead to a 46 percent lower risk of death, but, there’s a caveat–the length of your walk should be up around the 10,000 steps mark. Newsmax has more:

Scientists have proved in breakthrough new research that there are simple steps that Americans can take today to improve their health and dramatically reduce risks of illness and death — 10,000 of them, in fact.

Researchers with Oxford University found that sedentary individuals who increase the number of steps they take daily — from 1,000 to 10,000 — cut their risk of early death nearly in half.

Perhaps your best bet for a longer life is to live in a beautiful spot where walking a long distance each day is enjoyed. Check out the full post for all the details of the study.
