Meditation has been around for a very long time, but it seems as though it’s only becoming a popular phenomenon among western societies now. Perhaps the science is to thank, now that we now empirically that mindfulness can reduce stress and improve focus. That might be far from all, however.
For one, it may improve your overall health. Whether simply because it reduces stress, or whether it has a more direct link to our physical wellbeing, it appears that yoga and meditation can drastically reduce the number of hospital visits we make. The Huffington Post has more:
For the study, the researchers analyzed 4,000 records from patients, taken between 2006 and 2014, who followed a doctor’s recommendation to use relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and Tai Chi as an adjunct therapy for a stress-related health problem.
Their analysis revealed that people who used relaxation techniques were 43 percent less likely to visit the hospital. […] the researchers found that mind-body practices resulted in annual health care savings of $2,360 per patient.
That’s a good saving, I’m sure you can think of plenty of better ways to spend it than at the hospital. Go check out the full post for all the details, although I’m sure your busy meditating right now.
